Every year, The United Nations World Tourism Organisation leads celebrations commemorating World Tourism Day on 27 September to foster awareness among players in the global community.
Tourism accounts for a significant share of the world’s GDP and is expected to continue to be an important driver of global economic growth.

Practitioners in the sector have worked tirelessly to maximize the inherent potential by contributing to job creation and entrepreneurial development, especially for women and youth and in the creative industry.

In this year’s celebration, UNWTO has identified investments as one of the key priorities for tourism’s recovery and future growth and development. World Tourism Day 2023, UNWTO highlights the need for more and better-targeted investments for people, for the planet, and for prosperity.

In a video message, Zurab Pololikashvili, UNWTO Secretary-General, with pleasure welcomed industry stakeholders to another celebration of the industry feats.

Speaking at the celebration, the UNWTO secretary-general spotlights the opportunity to reflect on the importance of our sector.

Lending a voice to tourism in his message for WTD 2023, António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, noted that tourism is a powerful force for progress and mutual understanding, but must be protected and nurtured in order to deliver its full benefits.

This year is celebrated on the theme, Tourism and Green Investments: A Call to Action to the international community, governments, multilateral financial institutions, development partners, and private sector investors to unite around a new tourism investment strategy.

The event’s venue, Tafawa Balewa Square, was a bevy of tourism attractions, exhibitions of tourism-related products and services, fashion shows, food tourism, and dance among others

This year’s celebration was well attended by tourism stakeholders, Nollywood celebrities, government agencies, dignitaries, as well as media executives.

Anchoring Sterling 2023 World Tourism Day with comedic vibes is Alibaba, thereby making it a top-notch celebration amidst other dignitaries.

Among the speakers, shedding light on the beauty of tourism is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Bank Ltd., Abubakar Suleiman.

Suleiman identified infrastructure and positive narrative as key to Nigeria’s tourism industry growth. He harped on the dire need for the government to provide tourist infrastructure in the country, saying that stakeholders need to promote a positive narrative about Nigeria and increase advocacy.

The Head, of the Tourism Desk, Sterling Bank, Abiola Adelana, calls on Nigerian citizens to promote domestic tourism. The award-winning banker maintained that collaboration among industry stakeholders is key in order to position the tourism sector in the country.

Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture in Lagos State, Mrs. Toke Benson, dwelled on her commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to bolster the tourism sector in Lagos.

On the government’s collaboration with the stakeholders in the industry, the Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedu, echoed the sentiment of partnership and visions of progress, affirming the state government’s readiness to partner with the private sector to harness the full potential of its tourism industry.
